Shopping for a Baja Hoodie

Ryan Mandelbaum, The Writers Network

The baja hoodie, affectionately nicknamed "the drug rug," is not just any old hooded sweatshirt, but a symbol of the free-spirited and free-thinking human being. The sweatshirt, which evolved from the traditional South American woolen pancho, became a staple of hippie attire due to its loose, comfortable fit, and thick, durable construction. These hoodies are usually found in thick-woven hemp, wool or acrylic, and can come in many different designs, though they are most often found in muted colors and traditional patterns. One need not live an alternative lifestyle to enjoy the comfort of these hoodies, however; as noted by the LA Times, the drug rug is seeing a resurgence in popularity in 2011.

Choosing your hoodie

Depending on how you plan to wear it, you may be seeking either a vintage, traditional, or fashion baja hoodie. No matter which you choose, the fit should be loose and allow freedom and movement. Wearers of the Baja Hoodie should not worry about how they look with their hoodie on and instead should focus on finding the garment that makes them feel the best and the happiest. The baja hoodies most true to their original function should be rugged, and the go-to option for those looking to convey a cool, carefree and comfortable appearance.

Vintage

If you've decided you need to buy a pre-worn authentic garment, make sure you check your basement first, because it's quite likely that your parents or older siblings owned a baja hoodie that you didn't even know about! If not, vintage baja hoodies are a common find due to their lasting popularity- be sure to check thrift stores, flea markets, and websites such as Etsy and eBay. In these settings, a baja hoodie is inexpensive, likely less than thirty dollars. A word of caution when buying vintage clothing, however; it is very possible that a used hoodie will contain pilling, holes or tears, and should be closely inspected prior to purchase.

Traditional

The baja hoodie is an especially popular street fair product, and websites such as MexicanThreads.com as well as countless hippie and youth fashion stores offer traditional hoodies for around thirty dollars. Those looking for an inexpensive, brand new baja hoodie will likely have no problem finding a beautiful, comfortable garment.

Fashion

If you are seeking a more fashionable option, form-fitting baja hoodies constructed from softer materials have been produced by a number of designers, and are available online and in stores. These jackets can be found online and in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, where they can run from $150 to upwards of $1000.

Even if you don't identify as a hippie, there's no need to worry; this hoodie is a comfortable and durable garment that will likely receive a great deal of wear. Whether it be around the house or out with friends, your baja hoodie may very well become your favorite sweatshirt in your wardrobe.
